In the same area, Wat Chedi Luang, once Chiang Saen’s main temple, is also spectacular. Founded between the 12th and 14th century, the temple owes its name to its large pagoda (chedi in Thai) which was built in Chiang Saen style and is 18m tall. Constructed in 1290 by King Saen Phu, the third ruler of the Lanna kingdom, to contain his father’s ashes, it is the tallest religious Lanna monument in Chiang Rai.
There are also remains of ancient prayer halls (viharn) and pagodas (chedi) since damaged. The beauty of Thailand is everywhere – after Chiang Saen, continue along the winding Mekong River to head to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos convene.
